The United States has introduced several key updates to its student visa policies for 2025. This article highlights the major changes international students, especially from India, need to understand before applying.

1. Visa Interview Suspension & Resumption

From May 27, 2025, student visa interviews were temporarily paused worldwide. They resumed on June 18, 2025, with stricter social media and background screening requirements.

2. Social Media Transparency

F, M, and J visa applicants must disclose public social media accounts. Hidden or private accounts may cause delays or denials.

3. Expanded Applicant Vetting & Documentation

Applicants must ensure DS-160 barcode matches the appointment and upload documents to CEAC 72 hours before interviews. Stronger proof of ties to home country is also required.

4. OPT & Post-Graduate Work Rules

OPT eligibility expanded to all degree levels. Grace period post-OPT extended to 60 days. H-1B Cap-Gap protections allow work until April 1 the next year.

5. Visa Denials & Revocations

Thousands of F-1 visas were revoked in early 2025 due to minor infractions. Some reinstated by SEVIS via court orders.

6. Travel Bans & Restricted Countries

Proclamation 10949 restricts student visas for nationals of 12 countries including Iran, Nigeria, and Somalia.

7. Fewer Interview Waivers & Long Wait Times

Waiver eligibility reduced. Wait times in India average over 250 days, and 38% fewer F-1s were issued in 2024.

8. Rising SEVIS Fees & Stringent Monitoring

SEVIS fee increased to $400. Institutions now strictly monitor course load and attendance for F-1 compliance.
