How early should I apply for my German Student Visa? 

Applying for your German Student Visa, at least three months before your intended departure date is recommended. This will provide enough time for visa processing and allow us to address any potential issues that may arise during the application process.

I’ve already studied a few semesters in my home country and now I’d like to continue studying in Germany. Will the German university recognize my previous degree/ credits in its degree programme?
Each German university is responsible for determining its own admission policies. That’s why you should ask the International Office at the German university of your choice whether you fulfill all the requirements for admission and how much of your previous academic work will be recognised.

How much money do I need for my living expenses in Germany?

Compared to other European countries, the cost of living in Germany is quite reasonable. The prices for food, accommodation, clothing, cultural events, etc. are basically in line with the EU average. You will need around 850 euros per month to cover your living expenses. The largest expense is your monthly rent. How high are the tuition fees at German universities?

The tuition at German universities is very low, and some universities charge no tuition fee at all. Most German universities are funded by the government. Normally students in bachelor’s programmes don’t have to pay tuition fees. Low tuition fees are charged, however, for master’s degree programmes. All students have to pay a semester contribution.

How do I get a visa to study in Germany?

Some international students require an entry visa for Germany depending on where they come from and how long they plan to stay. What is a “Studienkolleg” (foundation course)?

If your school-leaving certificate is not recognised in Germany, you can still study at a German university by participating in a “Studienkolleg” (foundation course). Good German language skills are required. To gain admission to a foundation course, you must first pass an entrance examination. Participation in the course is usually free of charge. Foundation courses take one year to complete and conclude with the “Feststellungsprüfung” (university qualification assessment examination).

Can I enroll in an English-language degree programme in Germany?

What’s the difference between a university and a Fachhochschulen?

While all degree programs in Germany lead to a recognized bachelor’s or master’s qualification (or the German equivalent), there are some institutions, named Fachhochschulen, which are more geared towards practical learning. Fachhochschulen or universities of applied sciences, typically offer degrees in fields such as engineering, natural science and business administration. Attending a university of applied science may give you a closer relationship with industry contacts and offer more opportunity for practical learning, including internships. If you wish to pursue an academic career, on the other hand, Fachhochschulen may not be the best option, as there is less focus on theoretical work and they do not award PhDs.

Can I work in Germany during my studies?

Yes, you can. If you are a full-time EU or EEA student (or from Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland) you can work for up to 20 hours per week. If you are a full-time student from outside of the EU, you will be limited to working up to 120 full days or 240 half days per year before you must apply for a work permit. Upon gaining paid work in Germany you should contact the German employment office to learn about the legal conditions.

Can I bring my spouse or family while studying in Germany? 

 You can bring your spouse or family with you during your studies. Your family members will need to apply for a family reunion visa. They must also show proof of financial means, health insurance, and adequate living arrangements.

Can I stay in Germany after completing my Masters? 

Upon completing your Masters, you may be eligible for an 18-month job-seeking visa. This visa allows you to search for a job related to your field. If you find a suitable job during this period, you can apply for a work permit or EU Blue Card to continue your stay in Germany.
